Fortnightly Review - Weeks 0 & 1 & 2
I have rolled the extra 2 days from the New Year weekend into this post, just because it was easy.
Having a 4-day start to the year before returning to my main job allowed me to get a bit of a binge start to the year.
I figured that having run every day in December I wasn't going to do a long run to start the year, so I decided to go and do the Parkrun, and follow that up with a bit of mountain biking instead. The run was okay, 20:14 in windy conditions, but then I wasted nearly an hour driving to 4 different mountain biking locations to find them all closed. I ended up just going home and riding out the railway line. After griping about not doing proper mountain biking, I start the year by not doing proper mountain biking. And yet the bike came home in this state so at least bits of it were muddy even if they were mostly track and road.
And then on the last day before I returned to work the snow arrived. Having run out the railway line in the morning, I took the mountain bike to the pool, via the riverside path, which I can at least pretend is proper mountain biking for about half of it.
I went to Inverurie to do their Parkrun as one of my fast sessions, only to find it cancelled for ice.
Through the second week I got much more settled back in to my work regime, but I was doing 2 sessions most days, back to basketball but we aren't allowed to play games so just drills and training, and putting in weights / core straight off my turbo sessions, and yoga session in the evening.
I have done more fast sessions than I meant to, but that is partly because week 1 of any given year my definition of fat is just 8:10 per mile and I did two runs under that pace by accident.
So, as always, I have started the year enthusiastic and doing more than I planned. But not ridiculously more as I have in previous years. And I have done it in a more balanced way, with some pseudo rest days, rather than cramming a run in to every day.
And then on my very last delivery on Sunday night I tripped over someone's driveway, took a massive fall, cut up my knee, grazed my thigh and my wrist, bruised my hip and basically fucked myself up, to the point that I needed a handful of heavy painkillers just to get some sleep. I will see what impact that has next week but at a minimum it looks like basketball is out, and going back to swimming with the Uni and racing cross-country later in the week both look to be at risk.
