Training Review - Weeks 41 & 42

I have finished my bike target miles for the year and am well on course to break my 2,200 mile stretch target as well. I am going to try and keep that number ticking along though so should end the year closer to 2,500 miles. I did another race this weekend. The Aberdeen University Kings Aquathlon. I managed to get 4th overall, first vet (despite a better rank TeamGB athlete being there), and 2 minutes faster than last year. And yet I am disappointed. I swam pretty poorly, and by the time I was out of transition I had lost over 40 seconds on the eventual third place. And while I ran well enough to catch most of that back, it wasn't enough. Meanwhile, someone swam 2 minutes slower than me, but was able to run over 2 minutes quicker to take second place.  My hip is starting to bother me again. The injections I had at the start of the year have just about worn off now. I need to start chasing to get them redone again in time for next season.  Actuals, (T arget) -  Swim 4.4 ...

Training Review - Weeks 39 & 40

Okay. time to do one of these properly. I have been effectively on my limit of using my time for useful things the last few months and have been lazy about updating these.  My serious race season is finished. I still have a few races to do, maybe a couple of cross countries and a couple of aquathons but effectively my race season is done. I should therefore take a couple of weeks of rest, or at least take them easy, before I switch to winter training.  Instead I have managed to get a chest infection which I am struggling to shift, and I have started straight in to the winter season training with the Uni students again. This shifted my swimming noticeably last year so I want to stay focused on it this year.  I am also getting out on lots of adventures with my new girlfriend. We have been out climbing lots of hills. and generally roaming the countryside having adventures with her dog.  The numbers are down as I missed sessions to try and survive the...

Oh Vienna

I still haven't finished my Targu Mures race reports. I planned to do them while chilling out in Vienna, before racing in Bratislava. Instead, Vienna has been trip (only half a trip really) that needs its own post.  I love Vienna.  It is probably the most architecturally beautiful city I have visited. The weather every time I have been has been fabulous. The locals have been great. The other tourists have been friendly. The restaurants are great. Everything is maintained. It has great public transport, most of which is hidden from view but on time. There are bike routes everywhere. The traffic control means very few traffic jams. Everywhere you go, their English is levels above my German.  Pretty much the only downside is that being a European Capital means it is a bit expensive.  If they had an oil industry that would employ me, this is the place I would want to live.  I had a couple of days on my own and a couple of days meeting up with friends....
